Summer Cosmetics Overhaul: How to Simplify Your Routine

This is the time of year that I typically open my cosmetics drawer and reassess my collection of lipsticks, mascara, blushes, eyeliner, and more. Quite simply, there are some products that will not stand up to the harsh demands of the summer heat. My goal is to set aside just a few items that will dependably get me through the sticky, sweaty summer months. Now, it’s all about simplifying my morning routine. Summer is the time to cut out unnecessary steps; less is definitely more, when it comes to summer beauty.

 

My first “can’t live without it” summer beauty product is Garnier Skin Renew Miracle Skin Perfector Beauty Balm, otherwise known as B.B. cream. I read about B.B. creams for months before I finally decided to see what all the fuss was about. Turns out the buzz is true! This cream helps me skip about three steps in the morning. It is a moisturizer with SPF; it evens out my skin tone; and it gives me a little coverage without looking too heavy. Garnier’s B.B. cream is inexpensive and smells great. It’s a great start to any summer beauty routine.

 

19/365- "It does not Envy..."Although I typically make my eyes the focus of my look, during the summer months I like to switch it up. That’s because cosmetics like eyeliner and eye shadow always seem to smudge or feel greasy in hot weather. This summer, I’ve decided it is all about my lips.

 

In magazines, I’ve seen some awesome lip looks in bright colors like tangerine and hot pink, which feel fresh and fun for the summer. For everyday wear, a product to try is Yes to Carrots Color Lip Balm in “Peachy Keen” because it moisturizes lips and adds a hint of color too. For more impact try Maybelline Super Stay 14HR Lipstick in “Keep Me Coral.” This product was made to stand up to summer heat, from the beach to the barbecue.

 

During the summer months, I plan to keep it simple with a quick coat of mascara. That way, my eyes get a little pick-me-up but don’t look too overdone for a day by the beach or at a family picnic. Covergirl Professional Remarkable Washable Waterproof Mascara is a great product to try. I love the staying power of waterproof mascara, but I feel like I can never get it off completely. This new formula is waterproof (i.e., you won’t sweat it off), but it washes off easily when you cleanse your face at night. What a great innovation!

Yup, it’s true–summer does eventually come to an end. And after a few months of fun in the sun, it’s time to buckle down and hit the books. When you’re heading back to school, you want to put your best face forward. It’s the perfect time to reinvent your look and yourself. Back-to-school beauty is all about an undone look that’s totally effortless. Try adding these quick products to your beauty booty, and you might actually get to class on time.

 

Book LookLip Stain

The latest thing in lip color? Lip stain. Let’s face it; lipstick is way more Friday night date than Monday morning class, and lip balm doesn’t give as much color. Bronzer

Dry Shampoo

The best back-to-school beauty product to have in your arsenal? Dry shampoo, obviously. It’s a micro-fine powder that, when applied to your roots, sops up extra oil and dirt so you look like your locks are squeaky clean. It’ll save you tons of time in the mornings, and it’s a lifesaver after exercise, so keep a travel-size in your bag. Tresemme Fresh Start Dry Shampoo is a fave.

 

Scent

OK, no one likes that girl who ladles on the perfume before class, but you don’t have to go sans perfume. Even a person with the best skin regimen ever will suffer from the occasional party-crasher blemish on the face. Stress, diet, exercise, hygiene, hormone issues are all responsible for creating acne, so it’s understandable when a sneaky zit crops up right before a big event (first day of school, for example). Don’t worry–a spot treatment has you covered. Look for an ointment containing benzoyl peroxide (Neutrogena On-the-Spot Acne Treatment is great), and add a dab directly on that zit. Avoid the skin around the pimple, since benzoyl peroxide can dry out and irritate healthy skin. Armed with these three products to protect against breakouts, you can start your school year with a clean, fresh, and blemish-free face.

After-Sun Care Tips: Reducing Redness and Discomfort

I’m an outdoorsy gal. Just because it’s a hot and humid summer, doesn’t mean you’ll find me cooped up inside. Ball games, walking the trails with the pups, and working in the garden take a toll on my skin. Even though I slather on the sunscreen, my sensitive skin still gets red. My after-sun care routine includes lots of moisturizing,which reduces redness.

Need relief?

 

Fall in Love With Aloe Vera
As soon as I’m indoors, I hydrate my skin with an aloe vera-based beauty product. When I was a little girl, my grandmother would trim a sturdy stalk from her aloe vera plant and massage the thick ointment into my skin.

 

Now, as an adult, I need something simple and portable. One of my go-to products is Walgreens Aloe Vera Cooling Gel. The jelly-like product contains menthol, so it gently cools sun-kissed skin. The aloe vera moisturizes and helps reduce the tenderness of a sunburn. The best part? By the next morning, my red glow has faded into a summer tan.

 

Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize!
To keep your skin soft, smooth, and hydrated, moisturize often. I keep a glass of ice water at my desk and pack bottles of zero-calorie sports drinks when I’m on the run. The more hydrated my skin is, the better it looks and feels. But, drinking fluids isn’t enough.

 

I dread peeling summer skin, but sometimes, peeling happens. To keep peeling skin to a minimum and to reduce sunburn pain, I use plant-based oils to soothe my skin. After a shower, I massage Desert Essence 100-Percent Pure Jojoba Oil into my moist skin. This alcohol-free skin moisturizer won’t sting or dry out tender skin like alcohol-based lotions can. Plus, this oil actually dries without leaving behind a greasy residue.

 

Don’t Go for a Repeat
Next time you head out, cover up! Slip a sheer cotton sundress over your swimsuit after going for a swim. Or, splurge on that funky hat you’ve been wanting to add to your wardrobe. Adding more sun exposure to already tender skin is a no-no.

 

And of course, continue to use sunscreen. Let’s face it (pun intended): The best skin care products for getting that youthful glow we all crave moisturize, exfoliate, and protect against sun damage. As I get older, I’m realizing that having a strict skin care routine and using the right products are key to making my skin look great. I’m also seeing that it isn’t just my face that needs attention. I want every inch of my skin to glow. Here are some products I’ve tried that help my skin look its best.

 

St. Ive’s Naturally Clear Blemish & Blackhead Control Apricot Scrub

I actually used St. Ive’s regular scrub without salicylic acid for years, but I like this version better. I find this scrub is the difference between my skin looking okay and looking great! This product is like comfort food for my face; the consistency is thick; it smells good; and I’m a lifelong convert, as a result. This is the only exfoliating scrub I will ever use again, because it truly works to reveal my healthiest, most youthful-looking skin.

 

Bath timeDove Visible Care Body Wash

Now that I’m in my 30s, I find that even the skin on my arms gets dry. Huh? How did this happen? I love Dove’s Visible Care Body Wash because it smells delicious. I love treating myself to an aromatic experience in the bath or shower. But most importantly, this wash helps me to moisturize as I cleanse, which I need lately! I am definitely steering clear of drying body washes from now on.

 

Aveeno Active Naturals Positively Radiant Tinted Moisturizer SPF 30

Simply put, I must have a tinted moisturizer with SPF as a part of my daily skin care routine. I hate the cakey feel of foundation, but I’m not quite “Megan Fox” enough to go without any coverage. Aveeno makes great products, so try their tinted moisturizer with SPF, and you’re killing several birds with one stone. Moisturizer? Check. Coverage? Check. Sun protection? Check. The best skin care products always multitask!

 

Olay Age Defying Anti-Wrinkle Eye Cream

If I went away for the weekend and forgot my eye cream, I’d have to cut my trip short and go home to get it. Either that, or I’d run to the closest Walgreens and pick up another one. I believe that caring for the delicate skin around your eyes is key to maintaining a youthful appearance. I’ve tried Olay’s eye cream, and I like that it’s thick and creamy. I’m sometimes tempted to spread it all over my face but I don’t want to waste it!

3 Must-Have Summer Travel Beauty Supplies

Look good on the go! If you have summer travel plans, pack a warm-weather beauty kit. During the summer months, I cross the state several times visiting family and friends. Here’s a list of the most important multitasking beauty products I tuck away in my luggage.

The number one beauty product I can’t leave home without is a bottle of jojoba oil. This moisturizer hydrates dry skin on contact, works as an impromptu lip balm, and calms unruly flyaway hairs.

 

You can even use the oil as a makeup remover in pinch. Simply add a few drops of Aura Cacia Natural Skin Care Jojoba Oil to a tissue and wipe away smudged lipstick or eyeliner.

 

Organic Soap

When I travel, I like to pack as light as possible. If it’s a short trip, I’ll pack one bar of organic soap and use it for several tasks. An oil-based soap works well to wash my face, body, and even my hair in a pinch. Just remember to moisturize skin and hair after using soap, since some formulas can be drying.

 

I like to use Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps All-One Hemp Pure-Castile Soap Bar with a lavender scent. It’s 100-percent vegan, not tested on animals, and made from a blend of coconut, olive, hemp, and jojoba oils to leave your skin soft and hydrated.

 

Scented Deodorant

Unfortunately, I’m not immune to perspiration in the summer. To stay feeling fresh, I tuck a small scented deodorant in my purse. If a day of summer travel leaves me a little too warm, I’m ready to freshen up at the next stop.

Over the holidays, I introduced my mother and grandmother to Burt’s Bees skin care products. Now, they’re hooked! Here are a few of my favorite skin care products to consider for the special mother in your life.

 

Beautify her hands. The first place women begin aging is the hands. To reduce wrinkling, age spots, and dry skin, give mom a jar of Burt’s Bees Beeswax Hand Creme made with almond milk. When I presented this to my grandmother, she thought it smelled good enough to eat. The thick skin cream is ultra moisturizing and doesn’t leave behind a greasy residue.
